Thread Locker Most Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHY IS THE BOTTLE ½ FULL?
Thread Lockers are Anaerobic Products, which means that they set up in the absence of air. The bottles must have maximum air space to prevent them from setting up.

2. CAN I USE AN ACCELERATOR ON THREAD LOCKERS?
Definitely yes. Accelerators will set-up the Thread Locker immediately.
See our Turbo-Lock Primer/Activator #70-008.

3. DO I HAVE TO CLEAN THE SURFACE BEFORE APPLYING THE THREAD LOCKER?
It’s always best to clean the surface before applying. Be sure to remove all grease, dirt and rust. For best results in removing rust, use a wire brush. For grease and dirt use a clean cloth with Turbo-Lock Primer/Activator #70-008 and let dry.

4. CAN I REMOVE PERMANENT RED IF I HAVE TO?
If necessary, the best way to remove a Permanent RED Thread Locker is to apply heat with a torch (260 o F) and then use a wrench.

5. WHAT IS THE HEAT RANGE A HIGH TEMPERATURE THREAD LOCKER WILL TAKE?
Our Turbo-Lock RED High Temperature (Series 13) has a range of –65 to 450 o F.

6. WHAT IS THE CURE SPEED?
Most ThreadLockers have a fixture time of less than 10 minutes and full cure time of 24 hours. Please see the individual Technical Data Sheets for more information on cure speeds. For immediate curing use Turbo-Lock Primer/Activator #70-008.

7. DOES YOUR TURBO LOCK MEET MILITARY SPECIFICATIONS?
Yes they do. All Military Specs are available upon request.

8. WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS CAN I USE THREAD LOCKERS ON?
Generally they are recommended for use on metal surfaces. Some materials are more active than others and the curing speed may be faster or slower.

9. HOW DO ANAEROBIC THREAD LOCKERS WORK?
Anaerobic threadlockers need metal ionization and the absence of air to cure, such as when a nut is screwed onto a bolt, squeezing out the air – and hence, the Anaerobic drying and locking.

10. CAN ANAEROBIC THREAD LOCKERS BE USED ON PLASTIC SCREWS?
We recommend Turbo-Lock BLUE Plastic Screw Permanent (Series 20) for use on plastic screws. This threadlocker is actually a cyanoacrylate adhesive and works well on plastic screws.

11. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A THREAD LOCK, THREADLOCK OR THREAD LOCKER?
No. They are also called Fasteners, Instant Adhesives and One Part Adhesives.

12. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THREAD LOCKERS AND RETAINING COMPOUNDS?
Retaining Compounds are put on bearings before securing them onto shafts, or other non-threaded cylindrical attachments such a press fits and slip fits. Thread Lockers are put on threaded bolts before the nuts are put on. They appear similar but have specific purposes and applications. Retaining Compounds may be used as a threadlock, but Threadlockers should not be used as Retaining Compounds. Palm Labs has an excellent Retaining Compound called Turbo-Lock GREEN High Strength Retaining Compound (Series 17).

13. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THREAD LOCKERS AND THREAD SEALANTS?
Thread Lockers and Thread Sealants are designed for different purposes and applications, and should not be used interchangeably. Threadlockers lock and seal threaded parts with a strong locking/bonding strength for the prevention of the nut backing off. Thread Sealants seal threaded parts tighter to withstand very high pressure, but with lower locking/bonding strength. Palm Labs has an excellent Thread Sealant called Turbo Seal Thread Sealant. 14. CAN I USE THREAD LOCKERS WITH OXYGEN?
It is not recommended.

15. WHY SHOULD I USE A THREAD LOCKER INSTEAD OF A METAL WASHER?
During vibration, metal washers can shave and come loose.

16. WHY SHOULD I USE A THREAD LOCKER INSTEAD OF A CYANOACRYLATE?
Cyanoacrylates do not have the strength of threadlockers.

17. HOW COST EFFECTIVE ARE THREADLOCKERS?
They are very cost effective. Generally, all you need is one drop on a 1” screw/bolt.

18. WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF THREAD LOCKERS?
15 months.

19. HOW DO I KNOW WHICH THREAD LOCKER TO USE?
Whether it should be Removable or Permanent, the Size of the Bolt, and the Temperature, are all determining factors.

20. HOW DO I STORE THREAD LOCKERS?
Store in a cool, dry location. Refrigerate to improve shelf life. Bring to room temperature before using.
